If you’d like to explore deeper waters, you can head to the Gulf and target Amberjack, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Red Snapper, and Tuna.

Local charters offer half day, full day, and extended day trips. On a half day trip, you’ll most likely stay inshore in calm waters – a perfect option for beginners or families with kids. Longer trips will see you fishing further offshore, targeting larger species. These trips are great for more experienced anglers looking to fish multiple spots and target a wide range of species.

Some key spots to check out inshore are Shoalwater Bay and the Chandeleur Sound, to the west of the islands. To the east and to the south, you can explore the Gulf and target larger pelagic species. January

Start your year off on the right foot and head down to the Chandeleur Sound for some top-notch sight fishing. Your main targets this month include Redfish, Black Drum, Sheepshead, and Flounder.

February

The waters are still nice and cool, perfect for targeting Redfish and Speckled Trout. February is also an excellent time to go after Flounder, Sheepshead, Tripletail, and Black Drum for a tasty treat.

March

Black Drum, Tripletail, and Sheepshead start to show up in high numbers, making this a great time to hook a prized fish. Redfish and Flounder are also still putting up a fight, so bring that elbow grease and get ready for battle!

April

Now is a great time to hop on a charter and target Kingfish and Cobia. Closer to shore, you’ll be able to sight cast for Tripletail, Black Drum, Flounder, and Mangrove Snapper.

May

If you’re looking for Bull Reds, then come to the shallows and get your fish on. You can also catch Tripletail, Cobia, Mangrove Snapper, Kingfish, and Blacktip Shark for a fun-filled day out.

June

Red Snapper season begins and everyone is trying to secure their spot on a charter. Plan your trip in advance and get ready to head offshore for an adventure in the Gulf! You can also expect to catch Red and Gag Grouper, as well as Lane and Vermilion Snapper.

July

Red Snapper is all the rage, so if you haven’t gone yet, book a trip in July. While you’re offshore, why not head to the Tuna grounds and try to land yourself a big Yellowfin for plenty of fun and a tasty treat.

August

Head offshore and target Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Tuna, and Vermilion Snapper. If you plan on staying closer to shore, you’ll encounter Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, and Spanish Mackerel.

September

Speckled Trout and Black Drum fishing picks back up. You can also target Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, and Sheepshead. Offshore, Mahi Mahi and Amberjack fishing remain hot.

October

Choose an extended day trip and hit the Tuna grounds for some intense action. Using trolling baits or lures when going after Yellowfin are effective. If not, try chumming and they’ll show up hungry, ready to put up a fight!

November

Black Drum and Redfish fishing are great this time of year. You may also see success in targeting Speckled Trout and Sheepshead. Have your guide help you locate inshore structures and you’ll have yourself a productive day of fishing.

December

December is a great time to snag yourself a juicy Grouper. Inshore, Black and Red Drum, as well as Speckled Trout and Sheepshead are putting up a good fight on light tackle.

We went out with my son-n-law and three grandchildren. Captain Ron put us on top of the fish first stop. We caught ~80 trout then caught 36 king mackerel trolling. Captain Ron and mate Dakota were very helpful. They made fishing enjoyable for the grandkids. They are knowledgeable and do not mind sharing fishing tips. They have great stories and very attentive. Captain Evan was fabulous. He was very knowledgeable, explained what we caught (spotted trout, white trout, catfish and about 4 other types), told us history of the area we were fishing and as a bonus gave great recommendations for places to eat around the area. We also saw dolphins and Captain Even took time to stop for us to watch them. Highly recommended Captain Evan and Frayed Knot Charters!!

Scott was raised in the area, so knows the location well. He is pleasant to talk with and his knowledge of the area's history is quite fun to hear. He was very attentive to making sure your hook was kept baited, so you were fishing the entire trip. Most amazingly for a fisherman, I didn't hear a single curse from the man. You do need to read his messages carefully. I didn't and hadn't realized he only accepts cash until the night before we left. Well worth the charter.
